andrgl
Yup. Youtube re-encodes your uploads. Their h.264 settings will bin motion, grain and tonality. Vimeo is really your only alternative if you care about quality. JackHorror

fuzzynormal
Ok, why? The basic reason: Garbage in, garbage out. You can use search engines to quickly find out the why and how of low-bandwidth video compression. Understanding the technology you wish to use will ultimately make you better at it. Higher end studios actually hire professionals to deal with this specific issue, so it's well documented across the world wide web super information highway. Good luck! Vesku
One way to get better Youtube IQ is to render 1440 or even 2160 version of your video. When browser downscales it to monitor size (normally fullhd) it looks much cleaner. dahlfors and JackHorror
Guest Ebrahim Saadawi
Vesku+1 Youtube seems to have a much more sophisticated compression algorithm for 4K videos compared to 1080p, try uploading a native 1080p file to youtube as a 1080p file, then try upscaling it to 4K in your NLE then upload it to youtube as a 4K video, now compare both videos when playen on YT, the 4K one has much less compression. It's just something I noticed lately.
