GH4: why not use maximum in-camera noise reduction if shooting 4K for 1080 output?

Why not use maximum GH4 in-camera noise reduction setting if shooting 4K for 1080 output?

I know Neat Video will do a better job in post, but it's a real time and processor hog. Also, I haven't seen any evidence that Neat cleans up 'pure' noisy footage better than the mushy noise you get with NR on. Softness was the reason I didn't use both on previous (1080) cameras, but I'm actually actively looking for ways of softening the image from the GH4.

I'll do some tests and post them if I have time ...

Yeah, why not? Give it a try and let us know about the results!

To me it seems like most people go out and buy a camera, then read a shooters guide and don't do any experimenting themselves. It seems a bit silly that a camera manufacturer would allow you to change so many parameters when, at the same time, there's one best setting for all shooting conditions.

Matt, I've been enjoying the footage you've put online recently as well as your thoughts, so let us know how the experiment goes.

hmm.. noise reduction, whether neat video or in camera should probably only be used when necessary, like when shooting high ISOs because you had no other choice..

High setting noise reduction makes everything look a little rubbery/plasticky generally..

This is a generic attitude, but my question was supposing that for 4K>1080 it may not apply so much. With the GH4 shadow noise is a problem at most ISOs, so a sweet-spot will exist. I'm certainly getting better results at default NR than pulling it all the way down to -5.

Tests to follow.
