Cinegain
Well granted, I wasn't expecting so anyways.Looking forward to that 5Dv as well though... but as stated before, not sure if that would mean 4K either. The only thing I could see Canon do is give us consumer 4K on something like a 750D. Administrators Andrew Reid Posted February 1, 2015 Author Administrators Share Posted February 1, 2015 Maybe they have no consumer 4K plans at all? Leaving it as a pro-only feature on C300 Mark II?
MattH
Good job really. Can you imagine how much rolling shutter skew there would be with a full sensor readout on a 50mp sensor!
MattH
Maybe they have no consumer 4K plans at all? Leaving it as a pro-only feature on C300 Mark II?Probably! Sure, the competition has 4k in consumer cams, but a lot of pro's are invested in cannon glass, so why make it easy (i.e. cheaper) for them. Cinegain
Probably! Sure, the competition has 4k in consumer cams, but a lot of pro's are invested in cannon glass, so why make it easy (i.e. cheaper) for them. Could be. But it would be region locked to either 30 or 25p. No 24p. Definitly not 60p/50p, although perhaps at 1080p. Resolution wise no C4K 4096 width, but 3840 only. It's APS-C in a consumer body, plastic everywhere, crop factor. Mic in, but no audio monitoring through headphone jack. It would pretty much be handicapped to a certain degree, but 4K nontheless. There might be a flat picture profile, but nothing logarithmic. Codec and bitrate would be okay for getting stuff right in camera, but would fall apart quickly when grading. Moiré/aliasing would probably be all over it.I mean... why would they do it? Because '4K' sells. But pro's aren't suddenly going to want this kind of shindig instead of a C300mkII you know. That's why I can see them giving it a go for a 750D, but not for the 5D-line just yet, before it's absolutely the new standard in a year or two and there's hardly a way around implementing it. A Cinema-line camera would then be doing 8K hopefully anyways. So...But you know... there's Magic Lantern, and if they could have a go at something like that... cool things are possible, surely. Rebirth of the 550D's success.
Administrators Andrew Reid Posted February 1, 2015 Author Administrators Share Posted February 1, 2015 Yeah, it's reasonable suggest the low end will get 4K first before the Canon high end stills range.Panasonic did it! GH4, but no 4K AF100.Eventually these DSLRs will get CFast then Magic Lantern 4K raw will be a distinct possibility.
Jed I. Clampett
Not a shock really, did you really expect this feature? What ever the reasons canon is not interested in DSLR filmmaking And I use two different canon DSLR cameras for filmmaking. This likely a smart move. It tells photographers that canon caters to photographers only and the perception is that canon As only their needs in mind and is less compromised. I think we are a niche in the overall market that DSLR movies are too complicated for jack and Jill, their needs are covered by cell phones. Thankfully both Sony and Panasonic and others are competing for our attention. I no longer look to canon for my needs and the new cameras hold no interest for me. I will add to my harem from other mfgs.
bertzie
It's a stills camera, it's focusing on stills. The fact that it has video at all is merely an afterthought. You don't buy a screwdriver then complain that it sucks as a hammer.
Clayton Moore
Corporations like people will do what they really want to do period. I agree with Andrew what Canon wants to do is preserve 4k for the C300 space. I might be they roll 4k in their pro video camcorder space by NAB this year but as far as LSS cameras, its going to be C300 I think. bertzie Your right but for the fact that Canon created huge DSLR Video market with the 5D. Sold and sold it, created a new customer base for glass just based on that, and now appears to be walking away from it. Of course they are free to do whatever they want...and your still right, its a stills camera.
Nick Hughes
Segmenting the 5D line could potentially work in our favor. The 5Ds and 5Dr will make photogs very happy, meaning there's the potential for Canon to make us happy (again) without the photogs feeling abandoned. Not sure whether this is likely or not (I'm going to lean towards not), but it could happen. Either way I'm looking forward to getting a used 5Dii for dirt cheap in the near future. Guest Ebrahim Saadawi
Companies are as focused on video with their DSLRs as they are on photography, they realize their users wants both. look at press releases.
Zach Will
Very old argument, from 2009 in fact! Move along please. That's how canon seems to see their DSLR lineup, as still cameras. I maybe shooting myself in the foot by saying this but I suspect that canon won't release a 4K camera cheaper than the c300. But what's so wrong with that. Canon wants to create a barrier of entry which protects the owners and the brand name. Think about it if everyone had amazing cameras, then no one could get jobs just for having a camera. It may suck that good cameras cost money but I think that a little bit more money is worth the extra job security.
sfrancis928
1080p30? That is hilarious. Let the mass Canon video exodus continue.

Just to recap - that's cheaper than the C300, it's a DSLR and it shoots 4K.But what's so wrong with that. Canon wants to create a barrier of entry which protects the owners and the brand name. Canon may very well want to create a barrier, but ultimately of course what sells you is years of experience doing good work with whatever camera you have at your disposal. Work thats truly inspired comes in many camera form factors. Its a combination of tools, the skills and the talent to use them.
Administrators Andrew Reid Posted February 1, 2015 Author Administrators Share Posted February 1, 2015 This 'creating a barrier to entry' thing... it's a bit like the Berlin wall. It's actually a barrier to keep people IN not out. They want to stop pros migrating to cheap cameras.
