Ninpo33
I was hoping they would come to their senses and do this for the first update. Still not for everyone of course. But at the used price of $1,000 it still a deal for what it can do and will be a nice little 3rd cam for me in the kit. Full frame pocket anamorphic with LUMIX stabilizing is really cool. Now I just need to get my little Yashica 1.5x dialed in and can have some fun. IronFilm

It's a much more honest approach, in my opinion, as you can reliably predict how long you can film with it. I am vehemently opposed to companies releasing cameras they know have overheating problems but still claim unlimited record times. Transparency and honesty should be encouraged. If I get the S9 I'll keep the recording limits on, both because I prefer predictability and because it makes me uncomfortable that by turning the recording limits off you agree that Lumix isn't responsible if you damage the camera's sensor. It's great, I guess, that Lumix begrudgingly gave users that option, but I personally don't care to risk it. I have three other cameras I can use in the event I need to film with no limits. MrSMW
Yes, a case of they would have been damned either way and I agree it's a better way of doing it, ie, have a limit...but allow it to be switched off at the users risk. It probably would have been better though if they had launched it with this. And with the 18-40 lens... But hey ho.
Super Members BTM_Pix Posted October 14 Super Members Share Posted October 14 So this could either be rumours of a new firmware version or him testing the version without the recording limits then. Removing the recording limit for the S9 does add to its utility because with a dummy battery it was likely not going to cause the same sort of heat issues that necessitated the limit in the first place so it would’ve been an artificial restriction for that use case. Fumbling the initial launch with the wrong lens and now fumbling the re-launch with the right lens and dodgy firmware is not a good look though. Though it will certainly benefit us S5ii users looking for a cheap companion version as the used S9 prices tumble due to these fuck ups ! Super Members BTM_Pix Posted October 14 Super Members Share Posted October 14 Fuji have just announced the X-M5 which is another swift kick in the goolies for the S9 (albeit "only" APS-C) and at $799 is the sort of price point and form factor that Panasonic should've been looking at for a new GX80. 26MP X-Trans BSI CMOS sensor X-Processor 5 with AI-powered subject detection AF On-sensor phase detection Fully articulated 3", 1.04M-dot LCD 20 Film Simulation modes, including Reala ACE Continuous shooting up to 8fps (30fps with E-shutter and 1.25x crop) 6.2K 3:2 video up to 30p, 4K up to 60p with crop 10 but 4:2:2 External mic and 3.5mm headphone socket https://fujifilm-x.com/global/products/cameras/x-m5/

I had been thinking if I buy a new camera next year (highly unlikely, but always possible) it would probably be a cheap Sony FX30. But perhaps this Fujifilm X-M5 is worth a look? Especially as it would be priced substantially cheaper than a FX30. Heck, for only a hundred bucks more you even get a handy 15mm to 45mm zoom lens: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1855426-REG/fujifilm_16900771_x_m5_mirrorless_camera_with.html I guess the lack of IBIS and TC would be the biggest two negatives for me. And perhaps the overheating. But.... https://petapixel.com/2024/10/14/fujifilm-x-m5-first-impressions-a-surprisingly-powerful-little-hybrid/ "If you need to record for long periods of time, you can shoot a long-play mode which still has the 1.18x crop but should dramatically extend record limits and avoid overheating. There are two screw mount brackets to allow the attaching of the Fujifilm cooling-fan unit if overheating needs to be more acutely avoided with the intensive record modes." (a G7mk2?) Unless proven otherwise, it's safe to say that Panasonic had the S9 pegged to replace small M43 cameras. Everything GX is looking long old and massively out-speced. Sadly, Panasonic would have needed just 1 real pancake lens to make the transition to the S9 a reality, but apparently that was too much to ask. Now, Fuji, with the X-M5, is going to have small M43 cameras for lunch, spit them out and collect dust on the shelves of mpb. What a tremendous opportunity blown for Panasonic as they drive themselves and M43 into irrelevance. PannySVHS and IronFilm 1
Thpriest
I agree that Lumix seems to be wasting an opportunity in the small "pocket" camera market. I think a GX80 successor with the G9's innards with PDAF, mic input and headphone jack would be a real winner, especially with the Realtime Luts. With the tiny lenses M4/3 has it could open a whole new market for Lumix. The GX80 is the only camera i have ever regretted selling. I'm mainly a video guy (professional) but I've just ordered a secondhand GX80 and a couple of tiny primes to try to improve my photography as for me it hits that sweet spot of small size and usability. I had looked at the GX850 but it lacked physical controls. The tiny primes and zooms really should be a strong selling point. PannySVHS
It seems Panasonic stopped listening to their customers. A 10bit GX or a S9 with Evf, hotshoe and mechanical shutter would be a relevant decision to give customers what they want instead of wanting them to want something else. Thpriest
If I get the chance I'll pick up an S9 as a B cam to my S5mk2 and sell my S5. I really like having smaller gear! What I'd really like is the S1H to be in an S5mk2 body with the same or improved LCD and EVF of the S1H. I have no desire to go back to an S1 size camera. Marcio Kabke Pinheiro
What is MUCH more embarassing for Panasonic is that they launched it with a 26mm f/8 manual focus lens that costs $199. VIltrox just launched a 28mm F/4.5 lens WITH autofocus, with almost the same size. Much sharper, much brighter, and, as said, with AF. For $99. "Full frame" too Only is available for Sony E Mount, but I guess they'll eventually release an X Mount version? With it being FF on APS-C it should have good corner performance too. Won't have the slight color cast in the corners that this lens has on Sony a7 series cameras. PannySVHS
PannySVHS
The relaunched S5 with full Hdmi would have been all the camera I ever needed for personal and semipro use. Another missed opportunity. There is no L mount option for the TTArtisan 27mm f/2.8 Lens, which @IronFilm has mentioned in the Fuji XM5 thread. Lumix S9 users might be using it for S35 pocket cinema fun. But then there are not so many S9 owners. If I had bought one, I would neither be exited about the micro hdmi which it shares with the Fuji XM5 nor about the fact that it does not offer external Braw while the Fuji does on the other hand. Though greatest deal breakers still remain the missing evf, mechanical shutter and hotshoe. Awesome to see the awesome Phillip Reeve been linked to btw:) IronFilm, John Matthews and Ninpo33

I will say the price is better on the older S5 model which I've seen go for 949 euros new. Given the choice between the an S5 and the X-M5 for $800, I might take the S5 on pure technology, but the X-M5 for size. PannySVHS
PannySVHS
I had my GM5 out today with the 14mm F2.5. Perfect match. I would love a GM cam with the robustness of the GX85. With the GM5 I am even worried about the writing on the buttons. It almost seemingly gets rubbed off by looking at it. Today my fingers were a bit sticky from the cake I grabbed on my way when roaming the streets. I felt relieved after washing my hands at a public restroom, no more reason to believe the delicate lettering could stick to my sugar glue fingers. So a GM85 please. I wouldn't need nor expect ibis on that one. The design and size are just so cool. Maybe a frontdial would be possible. Just get rid of the micro hdmi to make room. It's akward that this tiny cam has evf, mechanical shutter and hotshoe but the S9 does not. @John Matthews XM5 might be prone to overheating, maybe even more than a XS20. We will see. I was hoping the XS20 could be an alternative for my GX85 but than I read about the aweful overheating issues some user had. Size is intriguing for what it does. But it is too pricey anyway. Fortunately, as I have too many cameras collecting dust.:) Thpriest and John Matthews

Ouch. Add a tripod and gimbal and you have what the S5ii has integrated into its body, minus the FF sensor and EVF. More and more I'm thinking that the X-M5 is a camera you just take it as it is or you upgrade, but don't get accessories because your final kit will twice the size of the camera with those features integrated, notably the S5ii. MrSMW
2 hours ago, John Matthews said: More and more I'm thinking that the X-M5 is a camera you just take it as it is or you upgrade I think that goes for any camera really because if you want/need to add extra bits & bobs for it to work properly for you, maybe you need to consider something more suitable in the first place. But then again, if you don’t mind, enjoy even, building stuff up and breaking it back down as required, that’s cool. I’m in the former camp. A Smallrig base plate on my stills camera as it’s about 1 cm too short for my hand plus a Peak Design wrist thingy so the whole thing is snug in my hand. A Smallrig cage, side handle and Rode Micro on my run & gun video unit, but no top handle, external monitor, extra battery power or anything like that. A battery grip for each of my statics because I don’t want to be running out of power on a shoot and the alternative would be cages plus adding battery power that way, but that is way pricier so battery grips it is. I have think the beauty of something like the X-M5 is its size, ie, lack of. Of course it can be rigged out, but little point really when it has bigger siblings more suited to that in the first place. Unless your name is MacGyver.
