I think we could mention Fujifilm too, perhaps not quite as great value as Panasonic (but Fuji's new X-M5 shakes that up! The best value camera currently?) but they do usually still provide very good value and do even better with their series of constant firmware updates.

Yes indeed, I did actually mention them above briefly along with LUMIX for pushing the innovation at budget prices. I’m going to order the black X-m5 as soon as I sell a couple more lenses. At $800 it’s a crazy good deal and the Ninja V+ I just bought used from Tokyo should be able to handle the 12bit 6.2k raw out of that little guy just fine.

Found a used Blazar Nero 1.5x adapter on sale last month and I found it does much better on APS-C compared to full frame. Looking forward to some super small anamorphic fun using the open gate 6.2k with both the Yashica scope and the Blazar on the pint sized X-M5.

Just imagine back a few years ago if someone told you that you could shoot open gate 12 bit prores raw at 6.2k paired with a Ninja and a new, small budget 1.5x anamorphic adapter for a total cost of $2k.

Thats a 9360 x 4160 image  after 1.5x desqueeze in post. Insane.

FB marketplace score, Blazar Nero pictured below with my dream lens, Tomioka 55mm f1.2 in m42 mount. Good times.

True. But not because of the A1mk2, but because of AImk2

With all the extra processing and heat generation, the body should have been enlarged to match those of other flagships (e.g., Canon R1, Nikon Z9). In room temp, the A1 could record 8K up to 90 minutes without any problems, but the best I've seen for the A1 II in similar conditions is 60 minutes.

Was me making a perhaps too subtle joke, as I was writing AImk2 instead of A1mk2

Because AImk2 is going to totally change the game for the stock footage business! (of insects, and everything else)

I saw that. I thought you were referring to the extra processing chip that allows for the new AI and AF in the A1mk2. That damn AI stock footage will finish us all!

Sony does ‘seem’ to have gone off the boil a little in recent times…

Low res LCD’s, a variety of video features ‘missing’ and pretty piss-poor firmware updates are the main gripes.

But then all brands have pros and cons…

Personally, I think it’s Nikon who have the most traction right now, at least when it comes to hybrids.

Canon fairly similar in some ways but far less lens options and higher prices.

Lumix on hold.

Fuji need to get their AF up to snuff.

Leica and Hasselblad inhabit their own universes so I don’t count and nor do I M4/3.

I certainly would not pay what Sony are asking for their mildly updated camera when the other options that exist are available.

The lens though… Still pondering that one but still think the Sigma pairing of the 28-45 f1.8 and 28-105 f2.8 are a more compelling option for essentially the same outlay.

Well yes, possibly as I have also read the new XM5 is supposed to be a lot better.

To be fair, when I did use the system, I thought it was OK.

A bit shit in the early X years, but I had no gripes from the X Pro2 / XT3 onwards for my needs.

It doesn't seem to have developed much since then? Until maybe now.

Otherwise, I think both the APSC and the medium format system are great and I wouldn't hesitate to use any as they exist today.

The price of entry may be higher than Canon and Nikon mirrorless, but the image quality is undeniable. That is a world-class sensor that shares tech with the 8K Venice and Burano. Coming from Canon, there is also the issue of third-party lenses, where Sony has a huge advantage that balances out the higher initial price point.

In terms of the "subsampling," this is 4K/50 from the A1 and it looks incredibly detailed for what it is:

Here is the A1 in 4K/120 (HVEC 200Mbps 4:2:2 10 Bit):

I'm just amazed at what Sony achieves in this little camera and its highly efficient/compressed codecs.

Stunning.

I’m happy for the new announcement because the video specs didn’t change enough for me to care and that means a $3k A1mk1 is in my near future. I fell in love with the footage shown at the link below. There’s a trick people discovered about sending out 8k to a Ninja recorder but recording in 4.2k Gerald Undone discusses it at length on one of his A1 update videos. it gives you the best possible image out of the camera I guess.

That reminds me, does anyone know if Sony and Atomos were ever able to get the 8k output working over HDMI? It took  2 years of them working with Canon to get it working. Haven’t seen anyone mention if the mk1 has been updated or if the mk2 has the option for 8k external.

According to Sony's website, the HDMI output on the A1II is the exact same as the A1:

7680 x 4320 (29.97p / 25p / 23.98p), YCbCr 4:2:0 8bit / RGB 8Bit

4332x2446 (59.94p / 50p / 29.97p / 25p / 23.98p), Raw 16bit

Also, note that the gamma was locked to Slog-3 during RAW output. I believe it is still the same.

I agree best thing about the a1 II is the price of used a1, if it gets down to $2500 that is an end-game for less than the price of an a7r V.

It has very few disadvantages compared to Z8... Only the 8k60fps is missing and oversampled 4K... The subsampling is ok just something to be aware of, because of the occasional moire and it changes the grain texture in low light.

That 8K though... believe me when I say it's the BEST I've ever seen from any camera that small and soon to be affordable

Problem is that in every A1II review I read comments about used OG A1 becoming cheaper...

If the law of supply and demand holds true, things will be tough!

Yeah possibly and they are also quite rare, seen in low quantities at the usual second hand places.

The a1 prices will benefit though from the cash-rich section of the market - working pros - wanting latest and greatest a1 ii and a9 iii instead, whereas previously they had been focused on the a1 as the ultimate workhorse from Sony.

I dare say they might also be migrating to the FX3 as well.

And I say... buh bye, close the door behind ya 🙂

Hey Andrew, did you ever try the external 8k out to 4k/4.3k on a ninja? After watching Gerald Undone’s video on the A1 it looked like a great little hack. Just curious if you ever messed with it?

No never tried that as don't like the Ninja hanging off a rig, you're better off just recording the 8K H265 internally as it's such a good codec, and resampling to a 4K timeline in post (with added ability to crop, etc.)

The data rate is 500Mbit/s max, but it stands up to codecs in the 2500Mbit/s file size range including even Prores RAW.

Mmmm, a used A1 in a year or so could be a good viable option for me then...

Still on the fence between ditching my remaining S5ii and 2x lenses and going all in on a Sony/Nikon lineup and I probably could not spring for an A1 at this time or next year, but maybe in 2026...

The single decision at this time, or for early 2025 would be Nikon Z6iii vs Sony A1, because in every other department, including lenses, I am covered, so a pretty simple decision, mostly determined by Cost A vs Cost B.

Goes off to look at used A1 prices...

10 for sale on MPB.eu right now ranging from a single unit in 'good' condition at €4.5k with the rest between €5-5.3k for 'excellent' or 'like new'.

A bit beyond my needs then this year or next with used Z6iii's becoming available in the new year from around €2k.

I'll wait.

There are 31 functional bodies on mpb in the US right now ranging from $4,100 to $4,600.

Though Komodos are also $4,000 to $4,500 and more than a month ago after the price drop on new models, I bid on one on ebay and got it for $2,950.  A few months after the A1 II starts shipping, I'd be willing to bet that you'd be able to score one for <3k on ebay.  😄
