the build quality

just received my brand new om-1. kind of plastic. good but not perfect.

the build quality is a little bit better than my old em-5, not as good as canon 1d series and Nikon d1/d2/etc series.

seems to me that latest top cameras focus on features more than on build quality.

maybe em1x is better than om-1 in terms of build quality. worthy to have em1x if so.

May one enquire how you define build “quality”? Is it water or dust resistance? Physical strength of the body? Perceived “feel”? Reliability and resilience over time? Strength of the in/out ports? All of these?
Unless you have performed some sort of objective tests - have you? - I’m not sure what the post is hoping to achieve.

I’ve never been impressed by the perceived feel of my Blackmagics but they have never failed me. And - crucially - at the price there must be some degree of compromise.

I must have lower standards because my immediate impression of the OM-1 that I had was of a very robust design and construction.

Possibly the single best camera all factors considered; size, weight, ergos, feel of materials used, buttons, dials etc…that I have ever handled.

If I didn’t have the specific needs I have, without question it would be my camera of choice.

And when I say ‘specific needs’ I mean can it shoot stills at the level my A7RV can? Nope. Video like my S5ii? Nope. Be the all-rounder like my Zf? Nope.

But it’s still a very special and underrated camera IMO.

it is about the feeling when handling, not about the functionality.

om-1 is very compact designed. very nice.

just feels a little bit plastic. certainly, more plastic means less weight. but i still like 5d3 better in terms of the build quaility.

compared to leica r8, modern cameras are more consumer product, instead of lasting pieces.

long time ago i bid a kodak retina slr camera with a lens. i wanted the lens and kept the lens, and donated the camera to a local vintage camera store. even though the retina camera was a low end product at its time, it still feels some luxury in it.

now even the top of the line cameras are more consumer products in comparision.

probably the most durable camera i have is the panavision f900 (part only, as the lens interface is lacking), built like a tank, weighed like a tank.
