zlfan
i just checked my om-1 in video mode, it can do c4k 60p, h265, long gop, 10 bit. i will use 60p to compensate for the low bit rate 152 mbits/s long gop codec. om-1 has two level zebras, real time histogram, horizontal and vertical levels. actually good enough for typical video shooting. zlfan
sandisk uhs i 200 MB/s extreme pro sd card seems fine. i recorded in the above mode for 1 minute. no issue. v90 cards are 10x more expensive. seems no significant advantage. zlfan
the reason why i am interested in c4k is because i read from several sources that c4k 24p is more detailed than uhd 4k on em1 mk iii em1x etc. if om-1 c4k 60p is as detailed as c4k 24p, it is probably oversampled 4k from the 6k sensor. plus, using 60p to negate the low bit rate codec, finally, this mode can stand up against other big name cameras. if this works in real world shooting, om-1 is a sleeper, actually. certainly it is not good for low light, the sensor size is m43/43. MrSMW
I tried it in a direct head to head with Lumix and personally found it trash. Perhaps trash is too harsh, but I just did not like it. I would probably have 'liked it' more if I did not have anything to compare it to, but I threw it in at the deep end on a job as a B cam to an S1H. Loved the camera otherwise! zlfan
zlfan
s1h is ff, not doubt it is better in some major aspects.
zlfan
for new cameras, i care very much about the ibis. i have a gopro12, good is, now om-1, good ibis. in the future, maybe s5 3 x, something like that, good ibis on ff so good low light. The 4k60p is not as detailed as 4k24/25/30p - see https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/image-comparison/fullscreen?attr29_0=omsystem_om1&attr29_1=omsystem_om1&attr72_0=4k_60&attr72_1=4k&attr421_0=10&attr421_1=10&normalization=full&widget=850&x=-0.3659681831889651&y=-0.46405799840375833 10-bit UHD or C4K at 24/25/30p are the most detailed modes. 50/60p is noticeably softer/less detailed. 10-bit also uses the (better) HEVC/H265 codec. 14 hours ago, zlfan said: sandisk uhs i 200 MB/s extreme pro sd card seems fine. i recorded in the above mode for 1 minute. no issue. v90 cards are 10x more expensive. seems no significant advantage. zlfan
then i probably will use c4k 24/30p for long shots. i found out that c4k 10 bit h265 has only two picture styles, om400 log, hlg. kind of limiting. in photo m mode, sh1 silent fast electronic 120p, or sh2 50p or sh 20p, all of the art filters can be used, buffer is 75 if recording raw plus superfine jpeg. the refresh time is about half a minute. i like this mode very much. zlfan
just did some shots on a local busy street. the 120p photo mode is nice, people mostly ignored me. some although noticed me, but 75 frames were blasted in less than 1 second, just like taking one picture, very quick. the buffer clearance time was not bothering most of the time, because i spent time looking for the next good frame. v90 cards may cut the time in half. but i am really ok with it, at least for now. it reminds me of the nikon 1 v1, v1 can only do 60p 30 frames. in conclusion, it is a turbo gopro. Administrators Andrew Reid Posted December 30, 2024 Administrators Share Posted December 30, 2024 I think the E-M1X remains an underrated beast. The OM-1 has the better EVF for sure, and is smaller, but for some reasons the files look a bit thin in 10bit. Also there's no detail advantage over the E-M1X with both set to Cinema 4K. What's more the E-M1X doesn't take a hit in 8bit Cinema 4K. It has no 10bit but the 8bit is doing a full pixel readout, whereas the 8bit modes for Olympus colour science niceness on the OM-1 result in an inferior image. So although it's nice to have a stacked sensor with decent EVF and 4K/60p, the E-M1X is better value for money and arguably nicer on the ergonomics side too, if you just want to shoot super-steady handheld C4K 24p. OM-LOG and Flat grade ok in 8bit. That said I think I saw some OM-1 bodies for around just 1000 euros recently so maybe it's worth considering one too. Nicer for photography than the GH6 that's for sure. zlfan

I think the E-M1 iii has most of what the E-M1X has (except the AF subject detect and the extra battery) in a smaller package (the used prices are similar, with the E-M1 iii being a bit higher). They are mostly sub-1000 GBP in the UK (and the latest v1.7 FW update improved the subject-detect AF performance quite noticeably). At that price it's a lot of camera for the money. I agree (and the official OMLog400 to Rec709 LUT seems to produce some weird colours - the reds in particular). In case they might be useful to someone using an OM-1, these are some 10-bit BT2020 OMLog400 to Rec709 LUTs (in nine combinations of colour tint and contrast curve) I've made for my own use: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1-HBUDlPN0C3pQRX5c9Trmh8I3aM9hbiz&usp=drive_fs I use Vegas Pro for editing (and generating the LUTs) - so no idea how well the LUTs might work in Resolve etc. (and I rarely shot video where people are the main subject, so skin tone accuracy generally isn't important to me) (...and a big thank you to @Attila Bakos for the great free LUT tools on his Colorizer website ) zlfan
Administrators Andrew Reid Posted January 1 Administrators Share Posted January 1 Great info @ac6000cw As you can see from the DPReview OM-LOG400 test chart Olympus went for Bart Simpson 701 Space... Big yellow-green shift in the reds and skintones. So any LUT which addresses this before adding further grading would be a nice find. zlfan
om-1 seems having much better dr than em-5. i remember that in art filter 1, em-5 has very narrow dr. om-1 in art filter 1 looks much better. just a quick observation. will test more.
