Personally, I think they'll release a 60MP camera, probably in an S5ii body and priced somewhere between the A7CR and A7R V, obviously using much the same internals as the SL3.

An S5II-R then?

IMO, the body, shutter mech, rear LCD and EVF would need to be upgraded because none of these elements are 'flagship' worthy.

^ Agreed. S1/S1H/S1R shutter mechanism as the baseline of bust. A bit smaller than the S1x line, sure, as long as the robustness is there.

All this talk of no more proper Panny cameras coming and bailing on the system (in other spaces than here as well) and I'm thinking to what? I have zero complaints with the S1 sensor for either photo or video - it's the overall useability where things lag. I wouldn't exchange the S1 sensor for the Z6III sensor with all of its pulsing noise compromises in the shadows. I wouldn't shoot my X-H2s exclusively for the photography I do. Canon - the outright expense of canon?! Sony.... no.

Everything else is compromised despite we being in the age of "no compromises" and "no bad cameras." And it's true, but if things don't materialize in the next months, at least I will reap the rewards of having not purchased an S5II/x when they first came out. Don't like the shutter (but don't dislike it as much as the og S5) and I would still take that sensor over the Z6III.

This is a highly rhetorical post. Carry on.

And come on Panasonic.

Not a 'flagship', just a decent value 60MP full-frame camera - I think that's the Lumix-brand market area now (with the possible exception of micro43, which is a niche anyway). The high-end of the partnership is Leica-branded...

I'm sure Panasonic could design & build a camera with high-end build and feel, but I don't think they have the brand heritage to sell them at high enough prices. For example, the latest Leica version of the LX100 was launched last year, but no sign of a Lumix version so far...

The S1R has better build quality over the S5II, better EVF, better rear LCD, MUCH better shutter mech and the 47mp sensor was...and still is great.

Where it's not so great is 'average to good' AF for stills, but very limited AF for video.

Has a great 5k SOOC Natural profile, but no log.

Body design of the S1H was much better, albeit slightly beefier.

I personally would be 100% happy to have the the 61mp sensor from the SL3/A7RV in the S1H body and would buy instantly.

Ditto, the S5II/SL3-S sensor in the S1H body.

My issue with LUMIX has always been as above, - the right sensors in the wrong bodies!

I'd buy one of each instantly...but maybe I'd be their only sales, I dunno 🤪

...but by modern mirrorless standards it's quite a large and heavy body (from the left A7CR, A7R V, S5ii, S1R). The 1kg S1R is also about twice the weight of the A7CR. That limits the sales appeal of the S1x bodies to people who are prepared to live with the size and weight (and probably hands potential sales to Sony instead, hence Panasonic putting the S5 into a smaller, lighter body).

I think the S5mk2 is about the perfect size for a pro camera, it’s not too big but it is big enough to have great ergonomics.

I’d be happy with a S1Hmk2 with the same body but with a top evf and lcd (along with 6k 50p etc)

True, but personally I’ll take build over lesser weight, ie, +300g for: higher quality build, better & larger LCD, damped shutter mech etc are all wins for me, but would I rather have them in a smaller & lighter body?

If possible, sure.

And I do. It’s called the Sony A7RV 😘

I had the S1R and S1H and currently have the S5II and the A7RV.

Based purely on build, ergos, how they feel in the hand as lens platforms, I would place them:

A7RV

S1H

S1R

S5II

IMO, the A7RV and the S5II (book ended here as best and ‘worst’ overall based purely on weight vs size vs build vs features, ie not internal spec) are the least suited to the bigger lenses and the more mid-sized stuff suits them better and then stuff like the A7CR, primes or compact zooms.

Anything can work though of course, it’s more a case of what suits each of us.

I think the SL3 is about the sweet spot in terms of size and weight. But doesn’t have the rear LCD I need which is where the S1H and A7RV score massive wins for me.

So if any future S1R mk II, is anything around that size & weight with a rear LCD like the S1H or A7RV, happy days!
