1" is a known pre-existing sensor size for Canon and Sony customers (aka G7X and RX100 series).

And also smartphone users (flagship 1" phones).

So 1.4" is easy to understand, a bigger number, easy to do the marketing.

Micro Four Thirds is not just a sensor size, but a system. So it would be very confusing to bring the rival system terminology into the mix.

Strange, why not just call it MFT sized? I guess they don't wish to give any extra attention to the MFT system....

The m43 sensor is approx 1.35” so I guess Canon could say it is larger than the a m43 sensor.  Although the sensor area is likely the same due to the different aspect ratio.

But the comparison to m43 may give us an idea of the lens aperture.  Based on the LX100, the V1 lens could be f2.0 to f2.8

I could see this being popular with small businesses/marketing companies who use their iPhone currently but are interested in higher quality photos and videos to post, in addition to the zoomers that are interested in compacts right now. I talk to people in those fields every day and they are interested in "upgrading" but are confused/intimidated by the offerings out there. One of the people I work with at the Chamber of Commerce was asking about cameras the other week and when I mentioned Sony* they said they had so many options they didn't know which one to get, and that they also would prefer Canon because in their mind Canon = the best camera company. They've also mentioned in the past that they are intimidated by interchangeable lens cameras. If this is decent I'll probably end up recommending it to her.

* it's kinda damning that when someone asks a Lumix user about compact cameras I mention Sony and not Lumix.

I have a G1X Mark II with about the same M/43 size sensor from Canon back in the day, it's got a nicer lens (in my opinion) with the F2.0 wide end, and they have sacrificed that for the ultra wide 16mm equiv. zoom, and sacrificed the telephoto reach as well which is a pity.

Other than that I think the V1 is better than expected, very nice feature set - ND is usable for video I take it?

Not bad.

Pity the cripple hammer fell so hard on the camera in Europe and the US that it doesn't exist!

Good spec and a nice looking camera.

Why not available in Europe?

The US I kind of understand. Trumpet doesn’t want anything not branded ‘Made in MAGAland’ on sale.

Interesting indeed. Missed an EVF (but for the intended target is a no problem) and one or two proper control dials (you have one on the lens and one on the 4 way pad).

The cooling solution is VERY neat. Let's see the stabilization, since it is OIS only (plus eletronic stab). But kinda surprised, is really a new camera, not a rehash.

This looks to be the B cam to my R5C I would've picked up for an upcoming trip but doesn't seem like it will be available to Canadian markets in time. Ah well, at least this looks to be the start of more pocket options from Canon so will be interesting to see what else is coming down the pipeline.

Looks like this Canon V1 announcement is basically the new Nikon DL18-50 which many of us wished for but sadly and stupidly Nikon cancelled their entire Nikon DL Series 😞

Canon is clearly targeting the vlogging market. Which means it must have an UWA lens. Got to sacrifice the longer end of the zoom, either that or they'll be forced to compromise in other areas: Weight? Price? Quality? F-Stop?

I'd say sacrificing the telephoto reach was the right decision.

Hopefully they'll do something like the planned Nikon DL Series (which had three different cameras, all based around the same idead of a premium P&S but with three different lenses for three different types of users), if the Canon V1 is a big success.

Launching another camera for the non-vloggers which is 24mm (maaaybe 28mm) to portrait / short telephoto length, and a third camera for those who want a superzoom camera. (something comparable-ish with the never released Nikon DL24-500 F2.8-5.6, or perhaps like the Sony RX10 / Panasonic FZ2500 we have currently, but with a somewhat bigger 1.4" sensor)

Awfully hard to use the EVF while you're taking a selfie.

Specwisee this looks like the camera i have been waiting for ( .. apart from the 5.6). The material from the camera in the promotion video looks pretty horrible though, especially in comparison to the beautifully shot and great looking rest of the commercial ( what did they shoot it on?)
