Canon V1 1.4” sensor 16-50mm

My initial reaction to this camera was "actually thats really quite a decent package" and it is but I still find the FujiFilm X-M5 with its kit lens a more compelling option.

OK, so the lens will make it bigger but not dramatically so.

You can even just ignore the interchangeable lens option and just stick with the kit lens and pretend its the same sort of integrated compact.

At the risk of opening up the floodgates in a "what have the Romans ever done for us" style, I'm not seeing much of an advantage with the V1 against that combo.

And with FujiFilm's trickle out of production they are both equally unavailable in Europe too.

Agreed.

It's the lens for me, - great focal length IMO, but lens too slow.

I get why it has to be, but I'd rather have something faster (min f2.8 ff equivalent) or it's a hard no for me.

It's not that I am a bokeh whore or anything, but...

Yeah, don't get me wrong, the XC15-45mm F3.5-5.6 isn't exactly a Noctilux either but, for me at least, an ideal travel compact system will have a general purpose zoom that I can trade versatility against speed for and a compact fast prime for situations when I can't/won't so the FujiFilm definitely spanks it there.

Ideally we need the  Viltrox AF 28mm F4.5 full frame lens to be released again as a faster and wider lens for APS-C. Perhaps a Viltrox AF 18mm F3.5 ???  That would make the Fujfilm X-M5 on par as being as compact (if (not even more compact!) as the Canon V1, while having a kinda-ish similar wide angle lens and kinda-ish relatively "fast" F-Stop. 

But of course no zoom... I guess we need the Panasonic PZ 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 Power O.I.S. Lens or Olympus 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens reinvented in APS-C format for the Fujifilm X Mount?? Or then again, there is already the Sony E PZ 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS II Lens & Nikon DX 16-50mm f/3.5-6.3 VR Lens for APS-C. 

All of those could be regarded as "pancake zooms". None though are 11mm for APS-C (which is the FoV of the Canon V1)

Maybe the closest compact option is the Fujifilm XC 15-45mm f/3.5-5.6 , but 15mm is still a long way from 11mm. And although it's compact, it's certainly not a pancake zoom. 

Maybe the Sigma 10-18mm f/2.8? Sony E 10-20mm f/4 PZ G Lens? Tokina 11-18mm f/2.8 lens? Tamron 11-20mm f/2.8? Olympus 7-14mm f/2.8? Fujifilm 10-24mm f/4 ? They're all wide enough! But none of these though have the 50mm FF FoV / 35mm APS-C FoV that we need on the long end. 

Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Summilux 10-25mm f/1.7 Lens matches against the Canon V1  quite well when it comes to focal range! A little short on the wide end. However, it's waaay faster, and waaaaaaaay heavier. 

OM System 9-18mm f/4-5.6 or Panasonic 8-18mm f/2.8-4? Each a little short with their reach. And "compact" ish but not a pancake. 

I feel the closest comparisons to the Canon V1 might be the Nikon 12-28mm f/3.5-5.6 on the Nikon Z30, or the OM System 8-25mm f/4 on an OM System OM-5

They'll be a little bit more bulky, but at least they're the closest to matching the same focal range in a single "compact" setup as the Canon V1 has.

Under eight hundred and fifty dollars (with the 12-28mm lens!) vs a grand for the Canon V1.

I think for me, my no. 1 choice of fixed lens compact would still need to be the Ricoh GR3, probably in X flavour.

But for a ‘compact’ camera, I might currently choose my S9 with grip and Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 because it is jacket pocketable and a really neat little package. And because I already have that exact combo!

OK, I can only shoot it in APSC crop mode, but that simply makes it a still f2.8 for light gathering purposes, 27-75mm.

And is available in the Western World.

Or the Sony ZV-E10ii with the PZ Kit Lens. A combo I must admit I am slightly interested in.

Obviously, the Canon is for a different market and not for most people who frequent this forum. All in all, it's a solid release. Canon has been on a roll IMO. I must admit that I have been pleasantly surprised by the R7 I've been using lately. Not to mention the Canon camcorder. I know a lot of folks around here don't love Canon Log 3 but I think it's a very simple Log profile to work with.

If the R6ii shot internal raw, I'd probably sell my FP and go all in on Canon.

For totally different reasons, if Sony would give me an RX10ii (body/lens) with the 10bit from the E10ii, I'd be very happy. Or if Panasonic would release an FZ5000 with the internal ProRes... yes please!

Although in a world of brutal honesty, I’d definitely be inclined to think that these options are realistically more than enough for my actual needs.

Anyway, must dash as I’ve got more videos of the BM Cine 12K to distract me from making any actual material of my own with any of the 373 cameras that I already have in my cupboard.

Honestly, most of what we look at is indeed overkill for our true needs, and smaller and simpler equipment can get the job done.

I got a similar mount from another company to suction cup the OP3 to my car (and then shortly after, Tilta announced their mini-hydra for cars, darnit!).  I haven't tried it yet, but I'm champing at the bit to give it a shot in Spring/Summer and maybe get back to vlogging some of my visits to old mines (more likely, recording a bunch of footage of it and then never editing the video, like my last several expeditions).

Anyway.  You should probably just buy it if you see a sale.  It's really very good.
