Administrators Andrew Reid Posted yesterday at 10:15 PM Administrators Share Posted yesterday at 10:15 PM The main camera manufacturing countries just got slapped by Tango-man. China - 34% Vietnam - 46% Taiwan - 32% Japan - 24% Thailand - 36% Hope all the ones who voted for this enjoy their new electronics prices 👍 Juank and eatstoomuchjam 1
Administrators Andrew Reid Posted 22 hours ago Author Administrators Share Posted 22 hours ago It's actually worse. Over 50% on China in sum total of all Trump's tariffs. If you voted for this and think it's a good idea you need your head examined. Juank
eatstoomuchjam
I've been on a buying spree for the last month to prepare for this coming. I think I've bought like a year's worth of camera gear in a month. Guess I also need to think about which vintage lenses I want to order from Japan on ebay since there's still 1 month before the $800 de minimis exemption ends and those get slapped with tariffs too. I wish that the only thing getting fucked by those tariffs were cameras. This is going to drive up the prices of nearly everything - and all that at a time when more than 100,000 people are suddenly unemployed between government cuts and private companies laying people off when their government contract got canceled without warning. Oh, and they cut a bunch of charity funding for food banks and the like so... yeah. ☹️ newfoundmass and ArashM 1

So what's their plan for that logistical issue?

So even from a nationalist point of view, if my people get the best goods very cheap, my country wins. With tariffs, my fellow citizens get worse goods (because of less competition) at higher prices! Its completely opposite of the purpose of the trade. We're living in a timeline that Christians support billionaires who publicly despise the poor, and nationalists support the losing position for the nation. newfoundmass
The frustrating thing, as an American, is that lower income folks are among his most ardent supporters yet are the ones who will end up hurt the most by his heartless, cruel policies. I've said it on here before, I live in a mobile home. I made a choice to live as cheaply as I could, regardless of whether I could afford a nicer home or not, because I want to live a simple, affordable life. I own my mobile home outright, so I have no mortgage. I just pay a modest lot fee every month in the community I live in. My taxes property taxes are extremely low, and I live comfortably. A lot of folks here are lower income, though, and live here because it's what they could afford. They're decent, working class folks who struggle to make ends meet. A lot of them are on public assistance, like fuel assistance and food stamps. You want to know who most of them voted for, though? Based on the yard signs and flags, most folks here voted for Donald Trump. They voted for the man whose policies will hurt them the most. It'd be funny if it weren't so sad. It's a testament to the Democrats and their incompetence that twice they lost to a swindler and con man because they were unable to convince a majority of the electorate that the racist billionaire doesn't give a fuck about them. maxJ4380
It won't be just the cameras, electronics. The first item on the news tonight was the story about trump adding 10% to the price of aussie cattle. You guys in the USA better start working on a vegan diet perhaps, as we have the worst drought in 20 years happening down in Victoria and in Queensland almost a third of the state is under water. Losses so far are around 100 000 cattle and sheep and that's just the animals that we are interested in counting. You can bet the price of beef is about to go up here and if it goes up for us it will affect you guys too and a tariff on top as well. I just hope you guys have really good accountants, as its not hard to imagine trump trying to divert some of those funds to a charitable cause, like himself. Administrators Andrew Reid Posted 12 hours ago Author Administrators Share Posted 12 hours ago The numbers are based on some crazy ideas. To name but one tiny example... If a country imports diamonds to the US and that trade amounts to more than that sum total that country buys in turn from the US this has been factored into the sums. Does Trump expect the US to suddenly conjure up a diamond industry... and coffee, and so on. Stuff which literally doesn't exist or doesn't grow, at least in the quantities they need. The impact on inflation in the US is going to be staggering, and that African country with the big exports will simply sell the diamonds to somewhere else and the US will have achieved nothing. In terms of electronics, even if they make the shit in Texas they still need the raw resources. Plus the impact of US wages on a factory the size needed to satisfy the US market for phones alone is staggering. The product will cost an incredible amount more. Does he also expect the Japanese camera industry to uproot from Asia and plant itself on his doorstep? It's completely unrealistic to do and undesirable for US consumers even if it happens as the prices will have to go up by 3-5x or more to pay the workers US wages. Anyone still under the magic spell of nationalism thinking Trump is so great is about to get a massive fucking wake up call when they look at their bank account. If the hatred for guys like Biden runs so deep with half the country, again a wake-up call is deserved and well overdue in the form of 30% inflation which Biden had at 2.9% but Trump will turn up to catastrophic house repossession causing figures. MrSMW
As with most things in life, you can do what I call ‘common sense maths’ and work out how pretty much anything will work out. I’ve just spent a few days in the UK with my American father in law and with my American mother in law. Long separate and polar opposites politically. FIL votes Dem. Not because he supports them, but because they are the least bad choice for him. MIL votes Rep. And boy do we know it! 24 hour TV news and utter hatred of anyone and anything that is not DT. Canadians, Zelensky, Biden, transgender mice, you name it/them, they are all responsible for the shit that DT is cleaning up on their behalf. Meanwhile my FIL gets on with living his life and not spending a single second spitting relentless bile based on brainwashing and total misinformation. I think the situation will right itself when the delusional finally come to the conclusion they have been shafted. But not before a huge amount of damage has been done. Might be a (another) civil war prior to that worse case scenario…

I'm much more concerned with the impacts of things like the aforementioned 10% tax on Australian beef - though Australian beef is only around 12% of imports. But it's on Canadian, Mexican, and Brazilian beef (our three biggest import partners for it) as well... Tariffs on luxury goods like diamonds (and cameras) is... a little whatever, it's irritating. Putting them on basic goods that people need to live, on the other hand... that's just cruel. And in the case of stuff like beef, our domestic beef production is already about as high as it's going to be. Welcome to the land of the not-so-free and the home of the absolutely unnecessary inflation. newfoundmass

My experience has been that there are a lot of dumb people (I'd describe them as being in a cult, to be honest) but the biggest issue is that most folks that voted for him feel like Democrats talk down to them instead of talking to them, that they abandoned them. They're not totally wrong. At the end of the day they just want to be able to afford to put food on the table and keep a roof over their heads. Democrats really didn't address that, while Trump (sort of, in his dumb way) did. Now, me personally, I don't understand how you can overlook the racism, the fascism, the misogyny, transphobia, his multitude of business failures, his felony convictions, January 6, etc. but again, if the Democrats couldn't convince people that the billionaire scumbag who shits on gold toilets doesn't have their best interests at heart then that's a huge problem. Normally I'd say we're getting what we deserve, but the damage being done will last generations. My nieces and nephews will be feeling the effects of our failures long after I'm dead and gone, and that's a tragedy.

They're not totally wrong. Agreed, but a large part of the reason people feel that they are being talked down to is because they are wrong about facts, and then any attempt to explain those facts is perceived as being talked down to. There is a large range to how much "opinion" is in a given "fact". So I'm not talking about, "forgiving student debt will lead to a better economy," as that is not as clear a fact. But it is difficult to discuss whether burning fossil fuels contribute to climate change, or whether reducing the size of the IRS will lead to fewer taxes being collected--all without hurting the feelings of someone who is dead set on being factually wrong.
