But if you're a working class person that never went to college and are struggling to make ends meet, you know what you're probably not concerned too much about? Student loan forgiveness.

Yeah, I picked that example as something that I think can genuinely be debated, as opposed to fossil fuels and climate change. I'm very liberal, but its clear that simply forgiving loans has led to higher administrative costs in our education system--if we want to make it easier for students, forgiving loans with no other system changes is bad long term. And we can obviously find different potential solutions that allow people to get education that they want or need, without adding extra administrative costs to taxpayers.

So yes, I agree with everything you said, but I do think that there is a basic level of understanding the world that is willfully lacking among many on the right, with the willful part being key. There's a rebellion against rationality, logic, and understanding among my friends and family on the right, of which I have many. The very idea of gathering facts and using them to make an informed decision is a symptom of the Liberal Elites, and any attempt to do so is talking down. So I agree with everything you say, but my thesis is that many of those people who are looking for a life jacket believe that the process of sitting down and figuring out how to get a life jacket, is wrong.

The one positive thing I will say about tariffs, is that if higher prices lead to less consumption of useless goods, I'm all for it. Hopefully food and basic necessities can be left out of price hikes. Ideally we could find a way to keep people's first car nice and cheap. But if fewer people buy 2nd and 3rd cars, and we spend less energy building and throwing out shit we don't need, that is a good thing. Just wish there was more of a thoughtful plan.

Democrats need to reach out to the working class and win them back. You can't win elections without them, especially in the South and South West.

The problem with what you're saying here, and in other places above here, is that it's actually wrong.  Student loan forgiveness, sure, but a lot of Democrats including Kamala didn't run on LGBTQ rights (sure, her platform supported it, but it wasn't exactly a big topic in her speeches), global warming, or whatever other bogeyman your neighbors might think they did.

Democrats, including Harris, ran a center right campaign.  Their biggest mistake, I think, was in trying to appeal to people like your neighbors and the people in the South and Southwest who will never vote for them.  In doing so, they lost a whole lot of people on the left who are already not enthusiastic about voting for them.

Anyway.  The way Democrats would win some elections would be to actually do something.  When they're in power in Washington, they start claiming that they can't get anything done because Republicans are blocking them with procedural shenanigans or other similar stuff.  Now they're in the minority and claiming they can't do anything to block the Republicans.  Hell, Schumer and some others voted for the budget reconciliation package without demanding even a single concession.

Here in Minnesota, they got a lot more popular a few years ago because they finally had the trifecta of state house/state senate/governor for the first time in like 20 years and they decided to actually use their power to do things like add universal free lunch at schools.  It's one of the reasons that Walz was so popular that they decided to try to make him the VP.

The Republicans lose an election and they're in courts fighting it, on the news claiming that the other side cheated, etc.  The Democrats lose an election and they shake the other person's hand and say "good game."

Basically, the powers that be seem to think that it's 40-50 years ago and politics as usual.

It’s going to be like prohibition all over again.

The new B&H Photo branch will be a speakeasy selling smuggled camera bodies from Canada.

I live on the Detroit River... still plenty of Prohibition-era smuggling relics in this area- secret canals and tunnels and such. Maybe I should get a little dinghy and start making midnight runs for barrels full of bodies and lenses 😄

Yeah, I've been watching this for a long time, since at least the 1980s. That anyone who is educated is wrong and just observing things from your immediate surroundings is enough to know the whole world. I remember in the '80s visiting some farmer friends here in Canada, they were setting up a barn and had the walls in backwards which would cause it to collapse later. When this was pointed out by their son (who had travelled the world) one of them went on a rant about "the left wing professors who don't know their ass from a hole in the ground."

In 2016, when Trump was campaigning, here in Vancouver there were three Americans from California on a visit. One was originally from Texas whose grandparents were Mexican. He was pro-Trump and went on about how dumb and dirty the Mexicans are and how we're lucky in Canada how we don't put up with any of that (He wasn't aware that Canada is full of Mexicans but anyway...). One other was also pro-Trump and was proud that he only had a Grade 3 education so was a real person and not brainwashed by the leftist whoevers in the education system. Somehow that made him smarter than someone with a degree. The third person was suspicious of Trump and didn't know what to think of his two friends cult-like admiration of him and the MAGA movement.

It seems to be a thing with right wing parties now. A technique where when campaigning they promise a better life but when in power they do things so that systemic problems are not solved. If you think about it, when times are good people vote liberal, when times are bad people vote conservative. This means that it would go against their own longevity for conservative parties to improve things.
