Administrators Andrew Reid Posted July 30, 2015 Administrators Share Posted July 30, 2015 This camera highlights why Canon have been successful and profitable.Wish I could sell a 2MP sensor for $30,000 and have it all makes sense in eyes of the customer!! There is demand for this camera and it will be lapped up by broadcast and industry. No more infrared B/W shots on Big Brother!Yes they could have sold it to consumers and enthusiasts for $2000... it's only a new sensor, with massive 19 micron pixels (A7S is around 8 micron) but most would have looked at the crappy megapixel count and then struggle to get any use out of the 4 million ISO - even the creative filmmakers we are would have only a very limited use for that! 1 scene out of every 100 kind of thing. So they have done the right thing for business and dollars...this is a specialist use camera for the industry. Is it valid to say "no internal recording and only 1080p for $30,000 - that sucks?" well the customers who will buy this camera for the set of Big Brother or an astrophysicist up in his telescope will say that isn't a valid criticism at all - they will want a live feed off the back of the camera, no need for internal recording, no need for 4K either as delivery will be in 720p or even SD...but it is valid in the sense that there must be quite a bit of margin in this camera!! And it is a shame that Canon are not so innovative in their DSLR imaging at the moment by comparison. IronFilm and Mr.Floppy

Administrators Andrew Reid Posted July 30, 2015 Administrators Share Posted July 30, 2015 Will reserve judgment until I see how it does in lowlight. LOL. Pretty good considering it is 2MP on a full frame sensor and 19 micron. There are some sample videos already from the sensor before they commercialised it.Here was the prototype -http://www.eoshd.com/2013/03/breaking-news-canon-announce-new-full-frame-sensor-for-video/And the videos I'll try and find (only low resolution stuff on Canon website I seem to remember)They also have another specialist chip... a massive 200mm CMOS 40x larger than full frame, that one is in a Japanese telescope -http://www.eoshd.com/2011/09/200mm-canon-cmos-sensor-records-video-in-japanese-telescope/
Guest Ebrahim Saadawi
Yes it should be pretty impressive. They do say it's an modified/enhanced version of the sensor announced in 2013 so we'll see how it does. When I first heard of it, the resolution, the name, the form, the price, I thought this was an industrial camera not aimed at videography/cinematography at all, applications like governement/private surveillance, medical applications (I can at least think of ten enormously useful application for this is radiology), industrial manufacturing, laboratories, but then I found it has an EF mount, ND filters, AF, Canon Log, WDR, Audio, So I am kind of confused what this is actually aimed at, industrial or commercial applications? Anyway I can't wait to shoot at 100 ISO and use those NDs inside (by the way the older emoticons were way better than these)
sanveer
"As with the company's professional cinema cameras, Canon Log and Wide DR Mode are available for capturing a wide dynamic range."I am guessing that they have tweaked it a Lot, since they first introduced it. Also, codecs and sensor optimisation (including via incorporation of much more effective processors) are grossly underrated. I am guessing they have done a Lot since those noisy low light video of fireflies. http://***URL removed***/articles/5496399487/canon-multi-purpose-me20f-sh-camera-reaches-iso-4-million
Administrators Andrew Reid Posted July 30, 2015 Administrators Share Posted July 30, 2015 Note also the very nice positive locking EF mount - why isn't that on the C300 Mk II?
sanveer
Note also the very nice positive locking EF mount - why isn't that on the C300 Mk II?Not sure. Also due to the huge price difference? I actually like the form factor and the buttons and controls. I think Sony lost the plot with the QX range. BlackMagic and Arri seem to built camera systems around the size and they seem to have gotten it pretty right. And now Canon has a camera of a similar size to the Arri and the BlackMagic, and the form factor is interesting, even if the price is not (and the fact that it Does Not record anything internally). Guest Ebrahim Saadawi
Note also the very nice positive locking EF mount - why isn't that on the C300 Mk II?The C300II ships with a normal EF mount, but can be sent to a Canon service center to give it either an EF positive lock mount or a PL mount. I am guessing it won't be cheap (1000$-ish would be my guess) and for the camera's price it should have been included. When you look at it notice the proportions to the EF mount, this is a tiny cube, definitely not Alexa mini/Weapon size. http://3.static.img-dpreview.com/files/p/TS480x360~sample_galleries/0268024259/7136161627.jpg?v=3182

Julian
Most innovative Canon camera in a long time for sure! This is the video from 2013, when Canon announced the sensor. The video was only uploaded in 240p or something at the Canon website (and put on YouTube by Petapixel), so the quality is crap... Canon should show some 1080p footage! fuzzynormal
Are people claiming to be film makers, creative, artists really that narrow minded and straight up stupid.I think you got a bunch of kids that want to act like they know a lot --so the contrarian opinion mixed with criticism makes them feel like they're offering insight. It's a curse and blessing of being young...and, yes, stupid. Nick Hughes, TheRenaissanceMan and hmcindie
Jimmy
If Canon are using the same dual sensor readout as the C300 mk II.... coupled with the amazing photosite size, this could be a true HDR camera. 20 stops + ?!!Wonder if it has raw out? Mr.Floppy
Of course this is not a camera for everyone (I don't understand so many complains all over the internet). But it's pretty amazing what they achieved, and it will sell pretty great with its intended public. Also, I like the form factor.Maybe they will take a note or two for future prosumer designs. Wow. It has so much dynamic range, that characters start to appear from nowhere. With this camera, one doesn't need actors. Hahaha
Jimmy
Pure guesswork on my behalf... But if the C300 mk II can do 15 stops with 4x smaller photosites, then 18-20 seems plausible.Another thought, Canon have a good knack of keeping DR very high throughout the ISO range. Now, 4 million ISO will suffer... But I expect the stuff that would be a DR nightmare on the A7s might actually keep a really high DR on this.As someone who loves chasing auroras, this has piqued my interest! (rental only though) ... The a7s blew my mind shooting realtime auroras, this could be the next level
Julian
Dynamic range is 12 stops. You can find the full spec sheet here:http://www.canon.nl/Images/ME20F-SH_Spec Sheet_EM_FINAL_tcm16-1289589.pdfThere's Canon Log and Wide DR.Image Processor: 10 bit (8 bit effective). File format depending on External Device - I don't think that means raw is possible.
Nick Hughes
When you're shooting in light low enough to need over a million ISO, is dynamic range even going to be that big of an issue issue? Honest question. A moonlit scene seems like it would need way less DR than, say, a bright, daytime scene with lots of shadows.
