A departure from DSLR footage this time – a great example of some RED footage. What exactly can a RED really do in good hands?

Believe it or not this is just a test, shot on a Red ONE with MX sensor upgrade, between ISO 1600-3200. Canon K35 T1.4 PL prime lens.

This is too great an idea, to well done to ignore. It’s also a glimpse of the future for DSLR users. Personally I think this is the kind of image quality we’ll be getting from the Canon 5D Mark 3 in 2011. The video was shot with at least $40k’s worth of gear if not more. Had it been shot with a 5D Mk2, would it have looked much different? Well, the slow mo is a big part of this video, and of course the MX sensor appears cleaner at ISO 3200 and resolves 4K’s worth of resolution. But is the difference really as big as the price gap? It’s significant but not that significant. That’s the premium you pay for ultimate image quality.

The footage was shot in RED Raw, of course the Vimeo file is far more compressed than the original footage.

I believe the anamorphic style lens flares were added afterwards – it looks like a Tiffen DFX filter to me. It’s also possible to buy optical filters which do the same job. I’d like some, that’s for sure.

Congrats to Rick, then. The video was graded in post by Jake Blackstone – also, great work!

What a shame RED have now given up on aiming Scarlet at prosumers. And what I wait it’s been for Epic. I stand by my earlier criticism (especially of the fanatical cheer-leading of certain Red users which Jim seems to encourage) but it doesn’t meant to say that Red don’t make great gear as the video above shows perfectly.
