As regular readers (the best kind) will know I recently joined DigitalRev as a contributor. This time I went out and about with my Sony HX5 to get the low-down on how it’s Sweep Panorama produces amazing digital fisheye images, which are almost identical to ones done with a real fisheye lens!
This is the first really great new mode on a digital camera dial, let alone a compact camera, that I have known for… oh… forever.
I mean, really – is this the first time a pocketable digital camera has had a fisheye capability? I think it is! And the HX5 is also good at panoramas although these are recorded in lower resolution. Great camera.
The Handheld Twilight mode of the new Sony cameras, as well as the NEX line really does reduce noise at high ISOs too, and the article goes into how this works and how to improve your photos with it. On the NEX 5 it actually puts it ahead of Micro 4/3rds in terms of low light performance, at least for photography.
The high speed sensors make all of this possible, because in both Sweep Panorama and Handheld Twilight, multiple high resolution shots have to be taken at very high speed. I think we’re up to around the 10fps mark at 10 megapixels, so that gives you an idea of how far off 24fps is for raw video at 4K on consumer digital cameras. Quite far!
The Sony HX5 does however do good video. Check out my video with it in full HD if you missed it last week.

DigitalRev TV have announced a fun competition for filmmakers. The first prize is $1000 to spend on camera goodies!
The theme is passion, love, fun and cool and it must be 3 minutes long. Here is a tip – I’d only choose two of those, trying to fit all into one short video might dilute it’s overall impact – just get one of those right, and it makes for a video that is also fun and cool.
Have fun!
