Professional video cameras used to matter because they were the only way to get what you needed.

What’s the longest and fastest AF100 lens? <a target=”_self” href=”http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?icep_ff3=2&pub=5574929666&toolid=10001&campid=5336727214&customid=&icep_item=110608685112&ipn=psmain&icep_vectorid=229466&kwid=902099&mtid=824&kw=lg”>Canon 200mm F1.8 FD L lens on eBay</a><img style=”text-decoration:none;border:0;padding:0;margin:0;” src=”[CACHEBUSTER]”>
Image above is softened by my content management system’s JPEG compression. View the full 1080p GH1 frame (44mbit AVCHD) and Crew.tv’s Panasonic AF100 frame (100Mbit AVC-Intra) here Do DSLRs really lack resolution compared to professional cameras? In the technical sense, yes. But in practical terms, not really.
Crews.tv have offered up full resolution frame grabs of the unfinished AF100’s compressed 24Mbit AVCHD codec against 100Mbit AVC-Intra (the latter via the camera’s HD-SDI output). With Philip Bloom generating some excitement over the over-cranked 60p capability along with what I expect will be some knock out footage shot in London anticipation over the camera is high and it’s not even finished yet!
Jim Jannard can breath a sigh of relief. According to a Japanese sales manager, Sony’s ‘affordable’ S35mm pro video camera will cost in the region of $50,000 – in league with the Arri Alexa. I should however emphasise that in no way is this the official, confirmed price yet.
Amazingly the rumours were right once again, and somebody from NAB leaked the AF100 to 43rumors a day before the press release was due. The implications here are enormous.
With the announcement of the AF100, Panasonic have got a jump on the professional video departments of other manufacturers, notably Sony and Canon. They also have a relationship with Leica. Today I received news that new Micro 4/3rds cine lenses similar to the Summilux C range (housing by Band Pro, optical formulas by Leica) are going to form an integral part of the AF100 package.
(In the pic above, the 14-140mm lens seems to have some kind of adapter on the front of it – what is it?) Here are some to start it off. I’ll be seeking to ask Panasonic and to get some answers! The first interchangeable lens Micro 4/3rds camcorder is due to be released later this year and of course this is great news – so good to see Panasonic making…
