Comment on the forum This is a really surprising by Nikon, as I expected Sony or Panasonic to do this first. Nevertheless the Z6 and Z7 will be the first mirrorless cameras to offer 4K RAW via HDMI to an external recorder – namely the Atomos Ninja V. Check out the Atomos website

The Atomos Shogun now has the major firmware release we’ve all been waiting for – playback.
Before the GH4, NX1, A7S and Shogun can you remember what we did for 4K on $1500-$2000 interchangeable lens cameras? No neither can I! 2014 has been a great year with some great technology.
This is an early look for now, my unit has only just arrived!! I will be posting some ProRes samples in 4K from the A7S later this weekend. This is a device that’s set to unleash total magic from the Sony A7S in 4K. It also offers a way for Panasonic GH4 users to record 4K in 10bit to ProRes rather than heavily compressed 8bit 4:2:0 H.264. For the Samsung NX1 it is also…
On a trip to Pinewood Studios I saw for the first time Sony A7S 4K footage projected in a theatre. The surprise was just how well the 1080p held up for cinematic projection. I also had my hands on the Atomos Shogun 4K recorder / 7″ monitor, the new Sony PXW X70 1″ camcorder with 10bit XAVC codec and more…
Picture (“Buddy”) courtesy of James Miller, inset – the CYP 4K HDMI scaler The picture above (click for 1080p original) is from the 4K full frame sensor inside the Sony A7S (ISO 3200, S-LOG2). Internally the camera does a simple downscale of the 4K signal to 2K for standard 1080p XAVC or HDMI recording – but James discovered adding a hardware scaler on the end of the 4K HDMI signal results in a…
[vimeo]http://vimeo.com/99808847[/vimeo] Though the Shogun has not yet been released you can still obtain one of the best HD signals available on the market from the GH4’s HDMI port. This is 10bit 4:2:2 and oversampled internally from 4K, a bit like on the Sony FS700 but for only $1699. The video above shows how to setup the camera for recording 10bit 1080p onto the Atomos Blade. In the next few days…
[vimeo]http://vimeo.com/86130834[/vimeo] Above:Â interview with Illya Friedman of Hot Rod Cameras, by Dan Chung The GH4 is a consumer camera but one which has the most pro-camera leanings I’ve ever seen from a consumer or even prosumer model. Because of that many professional shooters are considering the GH4. Here then are some of the remaining questions from pros on the EOSHD forum answered…
