Blackmagic once again caused quite a stir at NAB with three new cameras. I like the URSA Mini the best but here we have the old Pocket and Studio cameras reincarnated. They are a lot cuter this time. These cameras are exceptionally innovative and certainly break all the known performance / size ratios. Although they look very similar on the surface they are aimed at very different users. I’ll now delve into how the…

I just received a tidbit of info from a reader. Apparently Blackmagic have a third camera we’ve not seen yet on any of the posters at NAB. The show opens shortly.
Here is the Blackmagic URSA Mini pictured at NAB. Not much larger than a Sony FS7, it doesn’t need much in the way of extra work-arounds or rigging to get fired up. I especially love the Alexa-like viewfinder.
I have some information on a new 4K CMOS sensor which may or may not be announced at NAB in a future Blackmagic camera.
[vimeo]http://vimeo.com/116985909[/vimeo] Two of the most exciting lenses for GH4 and BMPCC users at Photokina were the SLR Magic 10mm T2.1 and the Voigtlander 10mm F0.95. The SLR Magic wide angle is now available and gives you back your 24mm wide-end in 2.3x 4K mode. You could view it as an upgrade to the well regarded 12mm T1.6. Compared to the Voigtlander it has the advantage of less chromatic aberration, a stepless…
[vimeo]https://vimeo.com/112412323[/vimeo] Thanks to Norbert Bielan in New York for this test footage. You can read his thoughts on shooting with the URSA below. Blackmagic’s latest unified firmware release is mainly about the URSA and what an update it is. The new firmware bumps the maximum frame rate up to 80fps in 4K and adds a new 3:1 compression setting for raw recording, fitting more material onto CFast cards. The URSA also…
Blackmagic firmware Version 1.8 is set to be released for all cameras simultaneously. The good news is that the work to create a unified firmware seems to be done. This was the work which for so long was getting in the way of Blackmagic adding new features to their cameras (like histograms). From now on we could be seeing some more regular and more exciting updates. Straight off the bat with 1.8 there’s a lot…
Along with Philip Bloom and James Miller I have been testing a beta of the first Micro Four Thirds mount Smart EF adapter with Speed Booster from Metabones. Now the final version is available and it will start shipping end of June for $659 at the Metabones site. This version to be released imminently is designed ONLY to fit the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera. This has the lovely 0.58x glass…
