Without doubt my favourite camera series of the last 5 years has been the Panasonic GH range. But with the Sony A6300 on the horizon sporting a Super 35mm sensor with full 6K readout, is the future looking a bit shaky for Panasonic’s video wunderkind?

Panasonic now provide a smaller version of the VariCam S35 which is aimed squarely at the high end cinema market. The VariCam LT is Panasonic’s answer to the Alexa Mini and also competes with the Canon C300 Mark II and Sony F55 although at $18k for the body-only is a world away from the Sony FS7 pricing when it comes to the wider pro market for b-cameras and drones.
Panasonic froze image sensor research and development in 2011 and have only now resumed. The company has committed $80m to revitalise their image sensors business in light of growing revenue from their imaging business as a whole and hot demand for sensors. One of the goals of the $80m investment is the creation of an 8K sensor to be released in Panasonic cameras around 2018.
Comment on the forum Rule number 1 of the camera industry – you don’t make a brand new 24MP full frame sensor without using it yourself, or in as many cameras as possible. Rule number 2 of the camera industry – Leica must extract massive profit margins from rich customers.
SLR Magic today unveiled a set of 2x anamorphic prime lenses designed for indie filmmakers. The set comprising of a 35mm, 50mm and 70mm will be on show at IBC in Amsterdam from September 11-15th 2015 and later in New York at the Photo Plus show (Panasonic stand).
