I got to play with the new Olympus E-M1 II today, a pro Micro Four Thirds camera they hope will sell for $2000. It certainly pulls out all the stops to imitate a miniature 1D X Mark II. This camera does NOT crop the sensor in 4K mode like the GH4. Instead, it over-samples from 5K down to 4K, using the full width of the sensor even with sensor-shift 5 axis stabilisation enabled.…

The X-T2 shoots the best 4K I have yet seen for $1500, with a great lens range, pleasing colour science, less rolling shutter and a different approach to ergonomics to Sony.
Canon have made the biggest step forward with their DSLR technology in 2016 than I’ve seen since 2009’s 5D Mark II. It isn’t the 5D Mark IV that has excited me so much as the 1D X Mark II, a camera that will see out the next 6 years as the benchmark for others to follow.
I’ve recently had a Video Assist 4K 7″on loan from Blackmagic. Here are some observations on this newcomer to the 4K recorder party.
The Canon XC10 is underrated on paper, not least by me! Having very little interest in one I decided anyway to give it a try. Glad I did.
The camera which Panasonic can’t decide what to call (GX80 in Europe, GX85 in the US and GX7 Mark II in Japan!) really excites me. It’s the first time that anyone has put 5 axis in-body stabilisation in a 4K camera which exceeds the performance of the stunningly good Olympus 5 axis system. It’s not quite as effective as a gimbal for sweeping handheld movement, but that pain-in-the-ass tripod you can certainly dispense…
I feel that Sigma are now one of the most innovative of Japanese manufacturers, certainly the most adventurous. Just look at the products. There are 3 Sigma creations I’ve invested in recently that have blown my socks off and bazooka’d the tea out of my cup…
